The Beast Report: January 2021

The Beast Report: January 2021
This issue of the Beast Report is dedicated to the entire Beasts OCR team. Here's to the start of a new year, new goals, and new and old friendships. What I love most about this team is we consider each other to be family. We are there for each other on and off the course. We help each other and our communities. We are strong in body, soul, and heart! Thank you to each and every one of you for inspiring us with your personal strengths and unique personalities. Whether you are a long time veteran or have just joined the team.....every one here holds a very special place in the Beast Family. Enjoy the stories, memories, and excerpts that follow, and lets go out there and make 2021 the best year ever!!!

Meet James Lapine! "In the beginning of 2013 I was tormented by post traumatic stress and depression. Anxiety was getting the best of me and I weighed 260+ lbs. I had allowed my wounds from combat to hinder me for far too long, a battle damaged left shoulder, pinched sciatica, and arthritis in my hands and knees. In Feb of 2013, my family came together and we set out on a journey to transform ourselves. A year later I had done that exact thing; weighing 183 lbs, off of 7 different meds, which I had been on for 8 years, I felt renewed and finally in control of the wickedness within. It was then that I heard about the race in Washougal and I accepted the challenge. I continued to feed my mind and body healthy nutrition and began to train. I was amazed I could run again, lift again, things I had not been able to do in quite some time. By August I had regained 12 lbs of lean muscle at 195 lbs and became a Spartan race finisher."

Meet Marilou Ubungen! "I was born in the Philippines and my family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 3 years old. I turned 50 this year and have a 24-year-old son. I’ve always been pretty athletic, but I’m fairly new to OCR races. I also had no desire to run races until a few years ago. My brother made me run my first Turkey Trot 5k in 2014, but I didn’t start signing up for races until 2015. In fact, I remember telling my cousins once that I would never run farther than a 5k. I never imagined that I would complete my first full marathon by 2018."

Meet Kelly Cole! For someone who claims to hate running, Kelly is very involved within the running community. She started a local running group to get people involved and motivated (Puget Sound Runners), and ran 52 races in 2019 (23 OCR)! She works full time as a Director of Operations for a restaurant, and what she misses most about live Spartan races is seeing all her Beasts OCR teammates!

Michael Lee is one of the Beast Pro Team members and has been racing OCR for over three years, mostly Spartan. He spent 2017 running the open division and the last two years running age group, with several podium finishes. He is a man of many talents as he used to be a professional yo-yo demonstrator for over 12 years as well. He's just as nice as he is fierce on the course. Meet Michael Lee!
